What Difference Will It Make Anyway?

– Posted in: The Shift Ezine

I was feeling very uninspired and depressed, and gazing out my window, I asked myself, “What difference will it make.” What I was really asking was, “Why bother, no one cares, and it won’t make any difference if I do it or not anyway.” I was only 16. That is the first time I remember asking that question, but I have asked it many more times since then.

The interesting thing about this question is that it carries with it the idea that no matter what we do, it won’t matter. It implies that no one cares, nothing will change, and who we are doesn’t count, and isn’t valuable.

It is not really a question, but a hurdle, specifically designed to shut down creativity, and value. This should make us wonder, “Who really is asking this question anyway?”

As I watch nature, I know that question is not part of Life. The tree doesn’t ask if growing will make a difference, the butterfly doesn’t ask if it should start flying, the fish doesn’t ask why attempt to swim up dangerous waters, the flower doesn’t ask why bother blooming.

Only we ask that question. Doesn’t this prove that it is not a question designed to help, but rather to harm?

It is a question designed to shut down our expression. I don’t know why, and if I spend time wondering why there is a “something” that doesn’t want any of us to express our unique self, than I am giving it power it doesn’t deserve.

Instead, let’s walk ourselves out of that question, and back into the Light.

When I opened my refrigerator this morning to get a drink, I looked at all the things available to me inside (including the marvel of having a refrigerator). I wanted to shout “thank you” to the person who came up with dark chocolate covered pomegranates, or soymilk, or mini carrots in a bag – actually I could list these forever couldn’t you?

We take these provisions for granted, but someone put their creative energy and time into producing these for us. What if they would have asked themselves, “What difference will it make,” and decided that it didn’t make a difference, and didn’t do it?

Yes, although sometimes we can see that what we do makes a difference, truthfully, most of the time, we can’t. And that’s why sidewalks aren’t cleared of ice, people don’t come out of their house to meet their neighbors, books aren’t written, songs don’t get song.

In the past, we have claimed that making money was a way to keep score. Now we know that it was always a lie, but it did help to motivate some people into making a difference, for a time.

Now that we have moved into a more evolved awareness of the wholeness of the world, or forced into seeing that money cannot be the way we measure our value, how do we?

The first thing we must all do, is realize the question, “What difference will it make,” when applied to who we are as valuable or not, is not coming from Love. Each of us makes up the tapestry of expression of Life, and so everyone single person, everywhere, is needed to make the whole.

We all have a divine calling; we all have our own ministry of sorts, we all have a unique expression to share. Just existing and expressing the Life force that we are makes a difference in others’ lives.

We can see this truth at work in little children. Their presence makes a difference.

As adults, we are no different. Our presence alone makes a difference. What we do with our time, how we express ourselves in the world, is innate in each of us. We do it, because that is who we are.

For most of us, we need feedback and support in this expression. However, we can’t measure our success in how many people give us feedback and support. Instead, we can listen to what is calling us, and become masters at its expression, no matter what it is, and find our pleasure and happiness in that doing.

We can also all become much better in acknowledging others that make a difference to us, because it does help keep that light on for them, as much as it helps us learn how to shine our own light.

Imagine a great big “thank you” ringing out into the world today.

That light would blast away many dark shadows that attempt to suppress expression for so many people with that dark question, “What difference will it a make.” The answer is – all the difference in the world!

Here’s a Truth 4 Today that helps: The only action that has ever gone on, or ever will go on, is the action of Love.

  • How did you know this was exactly how I was feeling this morning?! Perfect timing, as usual. 🙂

  • I am so glad! Probably because it showed its head this morning in our house – and this blog is the outcome of what I have to say to it!
